Established in 1835, the Assam Rifles is primarily tasked with counter-insurgency operations, internal security, and border security.

It operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and primarily focuses on maintaining peace and security in the North- eastern region of India.

The first edition of the Assam Rifles Half Marathon was held in 2021 to promote fitness, camaraderie and public engagement through sports.
